Because of the last couple of years, it came as no surprise to me that MAIP 2022 would be virtual. I won't lie, I really wanted things to be in person but I understand why the decision was made. Even though our main communication was through email and Zoom, I still feel like I gained a lot this summer.
One thing I really enjoyed during my time as a MAIP fellow were the weekly labs with different companies and organizations. There was a range of everything from Google to Tiktok. During our labs we were able to listen to in-depth presentations on different aspects of agency life from the lens of professionals. All of the speakers were eloquent and knowledgable on all things agency. As this being a program that promotes inclusion and equity, I feel like we had a lot of informative conversations and real-world examples of how to make space for ourselves and others. We also had conversations about income and how to get started in planning our futures. I honestly couldn't have asked for more from the MAIP labs this year.
As a fellow, I also got paired with a mentor to guide me through this entire process. I was lucky enough to have two very helpful mentors who have a lot of experience working within agencies themselves. They are two connections that I am grateful to have as a designer starting my career.
Speaking of connections, MAIP also paired me with 11 other fellows from different disciplines to work on a group project together. It was really interesting to see how a campaign is completely built out from start to finish because I usually only work on the design aspect. The deadlines were quick but similar to what I had experienced at my internship. I think it was a great learning experience for all of us and I'm so proud of our final presentation.
As a whole, being a MAIP fellow has provided me with a well-rounded knowledge of the industry and I am so appreciative to have been a part of it all. Not only am I walking away with a lot more experience, but I'm also bringing along a network of people who I've met along the way. Thank you MAIP 2022!
