When I found out my internship with Deutsch LA was going to be remote I was a little disappointed. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend a couple months in sunny Los Angeles? Not only that, but I also found out some of the other MAIP fellows were offered a chance to visit their agency or had even scored a hybrid position. I was definitely bummed but I was also determined to make the best of it.
Going into the first day was a little daunting because I am very much a person that enjoys collaborating and being around other people. Starting my first big agency job from home just felt less monumental and more isolated than ever before. Thankfully, everyone at Deutsch LA made all of those anxious feelings go away. I met six other super talented interns and actually felt way more connected than I thought I would be. Whether it was through a quick message on Slack or an hour long video chat on Zoom, I felt like we really got a taste of what agency life was like (at least at Deutsch LA).
As an intern we got to experience two kinds of work: internal and client work. Internal work was mostly small campaigns and ideas/assets for social media which was fun because we actually got to see some of our work posted to the feed! Client work, on the other hand, was a lot more intense. As I suspected, there were quicker deadlines and a lot more revisions. This is also really cool because I can say that I was able to work on projects for big name clients!
The biggest part of the internship though, was the connections I made. Over the summer, I really got to know the other interns and even became really good friends with one of them! We were also paired with a senior designer at the agency and I feel like I really learned a lot from him.
Overall, I am really grateful for my time as a design intern at Deutsch LA. Thank you MAIP 2022 for giving me such an amazing experience, I wouldn't trade it for the world!
